The New Disruptors is a
podcast from the BoingBoing family which focuses on creative people
making their way in the world using new digital resources. This can
be using social media, crowdfunding, subscription services or other
means. On first listen, this may sound like another podcast for the
technorati, but further listening will help build a picture of how
the creative community are building their lives online.
It's a great resource
for inspiring ways to fund or achieve your own practical project.
There are tips and advice on crowdfunding, from how a bunch of coders
from Northern Ireland built an automated home brewing system call the
brewbot, to how filmmakers are using sites like Kickstarter and
Indiegogo to part-fund or fully-fund their movies.
Particularly inspiring
is the episode devoted to Marisa McClellen, who started off as a food
blogger and has developed her career into an author, speaker and
media personality, all based around her niche topic of canning and
preserving food. She explains her busy schedule and how she built her
blogging empire. There are lots of discussions too on the subject of
Sub-Compact Publishing
(no, I'd never heard of it either), a new wave of stylish magazines
for the internet era, designed for Ipads and tablets. This can be
particularly inspiring for budding journalists and can offer a ray of
hope to bloggers wanting to turn pro.
Host Glenn Fleishman is
a well informed, enthusiastic presenter who knows just how to get the
best out of his interviewees. He brings his own experience as an
Editor-In-Chief to produce a lively and inspiring podcast that has
become essential listening on my generic MP3 player.
