#src2014 #reading
It's that time of year again when the thermometers start to burst and the bundles of pride and joy which are our schoolchildren are let loose onto the streets of the UK. When I were a lad we'd grab a ball and a stick, run off into the local woodlands and not be seen for six weeks, emerging in September covered in moss and ever-so-slightly feral.
Nowadays we have the Reading Agency to thank for a summer-long reading activity called the Summer Reading Challenge. Children are set the task of reading six books over the summer and reporting back to their local library. They can collect stickers and incentives along the way, all themed and lovingly designed by talented artists (this year, the amazing Sarah McIntyre!). At the end of the quest, they get a medal and a certificate which their teacher will issue. And the cost?
Nothing. Nada. Nowt.
Pretty good huh? The scheme has been proven to stimulate children's brains and curb the dip in literacy during he non-school weeks. At StoryWorld, we are passionate about reading and believe the SRC is one of the most valuable national schemes available. Long may it prosper.
