Screenwriting student today have it easy. I'm just saying, when I was at Uni learning scriptwriting, we had a library with a few shelves of scripts and the odd Syd Field book. Nowadays (blimey, I sound old) you have a plethora of advice from real screenwriters who create crazily good shows and films and then blog about how they did it! Professional advice is just a click away.
One of the best blogs for this is by Debbie Moon, entitled Never Get off the Bus. She's done a brilliant and fascinating piece on how to keep things fresh:
It’s also easy to get stuck using a character in the same way all the time. Alric, Jana’s father, worked fantastically for us as a threat throughout season two – but the last time we brought him back, we decided to reverse all that and show him as a broken man who’s lost everything. Immediately everyone’s relationship with him changes and there are new stories to play. So look for logical, compelling ways to use characters in different ways. There are more great pieces on the blog on how she created one of the best shows (not just kid's shows, best shows overall) on British TV at the moment, Wolfblood.
