Terrible Minds is the online home of Chuck Wendig, a
self-styled ‘Freelance Penmonkey’. He’s the author of several books including Blackbirds, Mockingbird,
Under the Empyrean Sky, and Blue Blazes and he has written prolifically for the
video game industry. His style is profane and gritty, and his blog is
delightfully chock-full of swears and cusses.
Apart from his fiction, Wendig also peddles an impressive array of books
and ebooks on writing, including The Kick Ass Writer, 500 Ways to Tell a Better
Story, and Confessions of a Freelance Penmonkey. They are written with great
style and vim, and if you take nothing from them, you’ll still be entertained
aplenty by his natural humour and acid prose.
The blog is worth
subscribing to, as it contains various nuggets of wisdom about writing and the
state of the publishing industry, but in Wendig’s trademark irreverent voice.
We’ve tried to keep StoryWorld inoffensive and family friendly, but
terribleminds is from the darker half of the web, so as the site’s description
warns: ‘He uses lots of naughty language. NSFW. Probably
NSFL. Be advised.’
Highlights
of the blog are posts such as ‘How To Push Past The Bull**** And Write That God****Novel: A Very Simple No-****ery Writing Plan To Get **** Done’
which, as it says on the tin, puts a rocket under the seat of anyone
complaining about how they don’t have time to write, and lights the fuse while
running away, giggling manically. Other posts in the ‘no-nonsense’ category include
‘Hard Truths about Writing and Publishing'
and 50 Rantypants Snidbits Of Random Writing & Storytelling Advice. Terrible Minds is a compulsive and hilarious read, and it’s well worth
picking up Wendig’s ebooks, available at the usual e-retailers at alarmingly
reasonable prices.
